Pioneer Settlement for the Creative Arts
I am a storyteller and was fortunate enough to be invited to perform at the annual Fall Country Jamboree last year which is held at the Pioneer Settlement for the Creative Arts in Barberville. I love the Settlement because the buildings and exhibits of this historical village are all incorporated into natural surroundings. Read more… They have a year round slate of special events, including their most famous, the Jamboree. The first Saturday of each month, they hold a music jam and dance time where anyone can participate, even if you don't have an instrument. I have a dulcimer and can't wait until next month to take part. The annual Spring Frolic Music & Dance Festival in April is one of my favorite events too. I also like coming to the Settlement when there aren't any festivals because I can leisurely roam the grounds. The displays and exhibits are of things my grandparents used when they were growing up. Some of the kitchen "gadgets" leave me scratching my head wondering what they were used for! The Pioneer Settlement has hands-on daily educational programs for school children. I think they are known as an adjunct classroom. It makes sense because they were founded by school teachers! It's always best to call the Settlement before you plan to visit if you want a guided tour, especially during week days because they may be too busy with scheduled classes. They have a cute "Country Store" that features handmade pottery, specialty books, hand woven rag rugs, children's games and items made by Settlement teachers, like hand dipped candles. The Settlement also hosts various classes for adults including weaving, quilting, chair caning, candle making and spinning. I'm looking into the chair caning classes because it's something I always wanted to learn. You know what the Settlement does most for me? It feeds my artistic soul. ![]() Cheryl Floyd DeLand ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
